In the last two years we have been bitten by the
non-competitive, long-distance riding bug. Participating in
organized randonneur events (including the premier brevet of all:
Paris Brest Paris) has opened a new world of riding up to us. Living
in Vermont, we are about 150 miles from the nearest organized
brevet, so we do much of our riding on the local roads. Having
something of an aversion to driving to a ride start, we have devised
a number of rides that originate from the Mad River Valley. Because
we live in an area that has a long history of pre-pavement
habitation, these rides have inevitably put us on many gravel roads.
Although we always enjoyed this aspect of our rides, we still
approached these courses from a road-riding standpoint… until we
participated in the D2R2—a ride that truly embraces the unpaved
roads around North-Central Mass. When we began thinking of the many
dirt roads of our home as sources of pride rather than obstacles in
the way of a good ride, our mission became clear… thus the series of
rides that you will see profiled here.
