O.k. moms, what better way to spend Mother’s Day than
by riding 200 gorgeous kilometers in Vermont?
Sure, we’ll accept all you dads (and sons) too, but make sure you
treat the moms in your life to something special the day before this ride!
This brevet is notable partly because it passes by a
half dozen bakeries, so you’ll never be that far from some great treats for
the jersey pocket. In addition
to the baked goods, you’ll also get a great taste of a few classic Vermont
rolling dirt roads as you pedal through Middlesex.
Then you’ll pass right through what is, in our humble opinion, the
prettiest state capital in the nation (and perhaps the most rideable too).
Then it’s down to Bethel winding through the Dog River Valley.
We come back on route 100 and through the Mad River Valley before
finishing this long loop back at the Red Hen Bakery and Café where yet more
baked goods are provided (and this time there will be an assortment that
will be available to all participants.
All in all, this is a great way to gear up for a season of riding.
This is the classic Mad River Century with a little jog up to Maple Corners
to make this a 125 mile ride. We start at Red Hen and head west on Vt
Rt 2; we take a right under the I-89 exit 9 underpass and climb up Center Rd
in Middlesex. At Brook Rd begin five miles of dirt which should be in firm
shape by May. Molly Supple Hill is a bit of a grind but once we
make the top it is a fly all the way down through Shady Rill to Vt rt 12.
We then head up to Worcester where we take a right on Calais Road to Maple
Corners. There are two - three miles of dirt climbing here, and if we
are not accosted by
nudists
we will soon be on the rollers out of Maple Corners on County Rd. We
arrive in Montpelier were we will do a little neighborhood tour to make sure
we get full mileage. After the fast downhill right on Upper Main
(after Towne Hill Rd and Vermont Compost) take an immediate 2nd right onto
College St then take Liberty and cross Main onto Franklin. Here we cross the
footbridge across the N Branch of the Onion River. Birch Grove bakery
will be on your right and the city to your left. In Montpelier we will
pass Onion River Sports bike shop, the capital building, and Vermont Life
insurance campus. We then head south on Rt 12 to Northfield.
Here we will pass Bicycle Express, the last bike shop until Rochester,
Vermont. Salute to the Cadets of Norwich University as we leave town
and climb into the White River watershed. A beautiful but
crazy-cracked paved descent brings us to Randolph, Vermont - once voted the
best place to live by Time magazine ( that was when they hosted the New
England Mtn Bike Festival, had a food coop and before the town center burned
three times.) We cruise through river valley farm land in Bethel and
hop on Vt 107 until the Blackmere Rd cut over to Rt 100. Once we
get on Rt 100 we head north through Stockbridge, Rochester, Hancock and
Granville. The Granville Gulf will bring us up into the headwaters of
the Mad River Valley where we poke our way through the valley towns, Warren,
Waitsfield and then onto rt 100B in Moretown - cross the bridge to Middlesex
and we've done our 200k brevet!
